The Rewards of Teaching Band

In this interview, Janice will speak to Grammy Music Educator of the year Phillip Riggs about his experiences teaching band and how he came to win the 2015 Grammy award for Music Education.


In the winter of 2016, Phillip was selected as the winner of the Grammy Foundation Music Educator Award!

Phillip has taught band and choir at various levels in North Carolina for the past 27 years. He received the Exceptional Contribution in Outreach Award presented each year by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors for his work with music education programs throughout North Carolina.

Phillip is currently head of music at North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and prior to this appointment, he was the first Fine Arts Coordinator at Reagan High School.

Phillip has also had a distinguished record of service to the Music Education world, being a past president of the North Carolina Band Directors Association, and serving as chair of the North Carolina High School All-State Band for eight years.
